Emergency Lighting

An emergency situation such as a fire can lead to sudden power outages and lighting systems becoming inoperable. During the hours of darkness or in areas where no natural light exists, that can mean people attempting to escape in the dark, potentially leading to increased levels of panic and danger as a result.

Emergency lighting operates independently of your mains system to illuminate escape routes and provide well-lit fire exit signage to help people find their way to and out of emergency exits and to safety. Scutum North can supply, install and maintain high-quality emergency lights for businesses across North England to help them both protect their staff and visitors and meet their obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Emergency Lighting FAQs

Is it a legal requirement to have emergency lights?

Yes, emergency lighting is a legal requirement under the terms of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. In an emergency, when there may well be a power cut, it is essential that there is enough light for people to be able to safely find their way out of the building. Emergency lighting should also be used to illuminate exit doors, fire extinguishers, first aid equipment and many other potentially life-saving routes and apparatus.

Do you need a certificate for emergency lighting?

Yes, your emergency lighting should be checked, tested and certified each year by a qualified person under the terms of BS EN 50172:2004, 6.2. In addition, you should also carry out regular manual tests, with different elements of your system requiring daily, monthly and annual tests.
