Mechanical Sprinkler Systems

Mechanical sprinkler systems can be a vital tool in suppressing fires in large commercial buildings, warehouses and industrial premises. By reacting automatically to the presence of smoke or flames, they use fire sprinklers to spray the affected area, stopping the fire from getting out of control until the emergency services are able to attend the scene.

Scutum North designs, installs and maintains fire sprinkler systems for businesses throughout northern England, including the cities of Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield. Ask for a free site visit so that our experienced advisers can assess your premises and make an informed recommendation for the right fire suppression system for your situation.

Mechanical Sprinkler Systems FAQs

What are the four main types of sprinkler systems?

The four main types of sprinkler systems are wet, dry, pre-action and deluge. Wet systems are most common and are permanently filled with water. Dry and pre-action systems initially contain air or nitrogen, ideal in areas prone to freezing or where accidental activation might damage valuable materials. Deluge systems use dry piping but are connected to a water system and cover a wider area.

How does a mechanical sprinkler system work?

A mechanical sprinkler system is activated by a smoke or heat detector. When smoke or excess heat reaches predetermined levels, the sprinkler is automatically triggered, releasing the necessary extinguishant required to put out the fire. This provides a faster response than you would get if human intervention were needed to operate a fire extinguisher.
